AI in Publishing: What’s Really Going On?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably heard a lot about AI in publishing in recent months.

More specifically, AI (artificial intelligence) actually writing books, narrating audio books, and the like.

If not, AI is here! And 2023 is poised to become a year of major disruption when it comes to using AI in publishing content, and even writing books.

In November of 2022, ChatGPT jumped into the fray with multiple ways to create content, not just books but blog posts, press releases and book descriptions on Amazon.

My take: AI is a great disruptor and I’m experimenting with one right now that’s designed to help fiction authors write faster, but most of the ones I’ve tested still need a human component, the author’s unique voice, those nuances that can’t be replicated.

But what about non-fiction writing? Writing that relies on facts, statistics, and black and white concepts? The human component factor becomes either less important or more important depending on type of content you’re writing (and reading), so that will remain a factor, even if AI in publishing becomes more intelligent, which I fully expect it will.

Years ago, long before AI was on the horizon, there were content experts that would use automated writing tools to create books on trending subjects.

Amazon quickly shot this down but as AI becomes smarter, knowing what’s computer generated as opposed to human generated will be harder and harder to figure out.

I found the below links through an article by the Marketing Artificial Intelligence Institute, and I strongly urge you to read the article and check out a few links, just to familirize yourself with what’s going on.

Even if you’re thinking, “AI in publishing is blasphemous!” you can’t avoid what’s going on in the industry, because whether you plan to use it or not, competitors will be, and it’s better to understand what you’re up against.

Or if you’re into it, just know that before you jump headlong into AI, or working with one of these applications, you’ll need plenty of time to do your due diligence since each comes with its own parameters and restrictions, it’s not one size fits all.
