This was our first big media deep dive on our podcast — we covered pitching influencers and thought leaders, tips for getting national media, securing author interviews and guest spots, and more.
So much more that we opted to split it into two episodes!
And we know securing media can be challenging. It takes a lot of work to get just one ‘yes’ but it’s nearly always worth it.
Our best advice is to ensure you’re being strategic, which also means being realistic.
If you’re a follower of the podcast you know we don’t sugar coat things. And media is no exception.
We have strong opinions about taking media one step at a time, and the following factors all come into play: whether you’re fiction or non-fiction, if you’re a debut author or have a veteran platform, if you’re getting engagement on social media, your reviews, your genre or topic, and a handful of other critical considerations.
So to keep from spinning your wheels, we suggest listening to these episodes, and then also scrolling through the media section on our blog (linked below), to educate yourself on what makes the most sense for where you’re at in your author career and what you’re bringing to the table.
Listen, everyone starts small. But every success story made the most of every single win.
Author interviews with podcasters that are just starting out, features on quirky, but super creative Bookstagram accounts, a guest piece on a smaller news and pop culture site – those are the stepping stones to the media opportunities most authors dream of.
So continue to educate yourself, be realistic, keep at it, and just know each seemingly small ‘yes’ is critical in the big scheme of things!
Hopefully you’re intrigued enough to listen to the whole episode, and we look forward to your feedback on the show!
Full-length episodes from our book promotion podcast go live every other Thursday. You can stream episodes from our website, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Plus, you’ll want to follow us on your preferred podcast platform in order to catch our helpful (and often comical) minisodes that go live every other Friday.
The minisodes are a grab bag of topics to include industry rants, publishing predictions and breaking news, basic (yet critical) business advice for authors, and more!
Do you have suggestions for future episodes?
We would love to hear from you in the comments section!
